IOM SEARCHES FOR VICTIMS OF NAZI PERSECUTION DEADLINE FOR CLAIMS IS DECEMBER 31, 2001 WHEN: CHICAGO, November 29 - Polish National Alliance, 6100 Cicero Street, Chicago, IL 60646 Press conference begins at 10:00am DETROIT METRO, November 30 - Polish American Congress, 11333 Jos. Campau Hamtramck, Michigan 48212 Press conference begins at 10:30 am NEW YORK, December 1 - Polish Slavic Center, 176 Java Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222 Press conference begins at 11:00 am TORONTO, December 3 - Polish Parishes Credit Union, 220 Roncesvalles Avenue Press conference begins at 10:00am WHAT: To date, over 269,000 non-Jewish claimants worldwide have contacted the International Organization for Migration for compensation as victims of the former Nazi Regime in Germany. Some 19,000 of these applicants reside within the United States and Canada. The press conferences listed above will help alert communities with the largest potential applicant populations (i.e. Ukrainian, Russian, Italian etc.) to the fast approaching program deadline. Only 34 days are left in which victims can make application for compensation. According to German Law the final application deadline is 31 December 2001. This deadline has been extended once already. WHO: Speaking will be Marie-Agnes Heine, a German national who acts as Coordinator for Public Information for the IOM compensation programs. Ms. Heine will be travelling from Geneva, Switzerland to participate in the North American press conferences. Also, speaking will be Audrey Cash, a Michigan native, who acts as Program Coordinator for IOM compensation programs in the United States and Canada.
